Megabyte vs. Gigabyte vs. Terabyte

These words decide whether you run out of space next week or in five years, yet most people have no gut sense of how big each one is. Here’s the scale, in books.

These words are on every phone, laptop, and storage plan you have ever bought, and they decide whether you run out of space next week or in five years. Yet most people have no gut sense of how big any of them actually is, so they either overpay for storage they will never fill or run out at the worst possible moment.

📚

In plain English

These are just units of size for digital stuff, each one about a thousand times bigger than the one before. Megabyte, then gigabyte, then terabyte, small to large.

A page, a book, a library

The easiest way to feel the scale is to picture books.

  • A megabyte (MB) is roughly a page. Small. A single document or a low-resolution photo lives in this range.
  • A gigabyte (GB) is roughly a thousand-page book. This is the everyday unit now: a handful of movies, a big pile of photos, the apps on your phone.
  • A terabyte (TB) is roughly a small library, a thousand of those thick books. This is whole-computer territory: years of photos, a large movie collection, everything you own with room to spare.

Each step up is about a thousandfold jump. That is the part people miss. A terabyte is not a little bigger than a gigabyte, it is a thousand times bigger, the way a library dwarfs a single book.

Megabyte is a page, gigabyte is a thick book, terabyte is a small library. Each step is about a thousand times the last.

Side note

A rough real-world feel, so you can shop with confidence: a phone photo is a few megabytes, a high-quality movie is a few gigabytes, and a terabyte holds hundreds of thousands of photos or a couple hundred movies. If your plan is measured in gigabytes and your life is mostly photos and texting, you have more room than you think.

Too long, didn’t read

  • These are sizes for digital stuff, small to large: megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte.
  • Megabyte is a page, gigabyte is a thick book, terabyte is a small library.
  • Each step up is about a thousand times bigger, not a little bigger.
  • Photos are megabytes, movies are gigabytes, your whole life fits in a terabyte or two.

New phones are ditching the little SIM card tray. An eSIM is the same thing, built in and programmed over the air, like a hotel updating your key card without a trip to the front desk.
