Fake Charities After Disasters (and at the Holidays)

Every disaster and every giving season brings lookalike charities and fake fundraisers. Here’s how to make sure your kindness reaches the people it’s meant for.

A hurricane hits. Within hours, your feed fills with fundraisers, heartbreaking photos, and “Text DONATE to help families now.” It’s the holidays and a bell ringer you’ve never seen asks for cash for the kids. You want to help. Of course you do.

Scammers know that too, and they show up right alongside the real helpers.

🎁

In plain English

Just because somebody’s wearing the T-shirt doesn’t mean they work for the charity. Don’t hand money to whoever shows up asking. Go to the charity’s official website yourself, so your money goes exactly where you meant it to.

How fake charities work

  • Lookalike names. “American Red Cross Relief Fund” sounds official. It isn’t the Red Cross.
  • Fake crowdfunding pages with stolen photos of real victims.
  • Texts and QR codes that lead to a donation page run by the scammer.
  • Pressure to give right now, by gift card, wire transfer, or crypto.

How to give safely

  • Go to the source. Type the charity’s website in yourself instead of tapping a link or scanning a code someone sent you.
  • Look them up on Charity Navigator, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, or the IRS’s tax exempt organization search.
  • Pay with a credit card on the official site. Real charities don’t ask for gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto.
  • Crowdfunding? Give to people you actually know, or to campaigns the platform has verified.
  • Take your time. Real needs will still be there tomorrow. A legit charity is happy for you to check.

Side note

A QR code on a flyer is just a web address you can’t read, the same trick behind the parking meter QR scam. If you want to give, type the charity’s address in yourself.

Too long, didn’t read

  • Disasters and holidays bring fake charities and fundraisers.
  • Lookalike names and stolen photos are common.
  • Look the charity up and go to its official site yourself.
  • No real charity needs gift cards, wires, or crypto.
