The cloud isn't in the sky. It's in giant, humming, refrigerated warehouses full of computers, and they're hungry for electricity and water. Here's what a data center is.
AI vs. Machine Learning
The two terms get used as if they mean the same thing, leaving people unable to say where one stops and the other starts. They’re related but not the same, and the difference is simple.
These two terms get sprinkled across every product and headline as if they mean the same thing, and the blur leaves most people unable to say where one stops and the other starts. They are related, but they are not the same, and the difference is easy to hold onto.
In plain English
Artificial intelligence is the big goal: machines doing things that seem smart. Machine learning is one particular way of getting there: teaching a machine by showing it examples instead of writing out every rule.
The goal and the method
Artificial intelligence, AI, is the broad, old dream: build a machine that can do things we would call intelligent. Recognize a face, understand a sentence, win at chess, drive a car. It names the ambition, not any specific technique. It is the whole umbrella.
Machine learning, ML, is one method under that umbrella, and it is the one behind most of today’s excitement. The old way to make a machine seem smart was to write out every rule by hand: if this, then that, for thousands of cases. Machine learning flips that. Instead of writing the rules, you show the machine a huge pile of examples and let it work out the patterns for itself. Show it a million photos labeled “cat” and “not cat,” and it learns what a cat looks like without you ever defining one.
AI is the goal of a smart machine. Machine learning is teaching it by example instead of by handwritten rules. All machine learning is AI; not all AI is machine learning.
Side note
The reason machine learning took over is simple: for messy real-world things like recognizing speech or faces, nobody could ever write down all the rules. There are too many exceptions. Letting the machine learn from mountains of examples turned out to work far better than any rulebook a human could produce. The large language models behind today’s chatbots are machine learning taken to an enormous scale.

- AI is the broad goal: machines doing things that seem intelligent.
- Machine learning is one method: learning from examples, not handwritten rules.
- All machine learning is AI, but not all AI is machine learning.
- ML took over because you cannot handwrite rules for messy real-world tasks.
