What Is a CAPTCHA? (And Why Every Website Wants Proof You’re Human)

Click every traffic light. Now do it again. CAPTCHAs are bouncers that keep robots out, and if you keep failing them, the problem is probably your connection, not you.

“Select all images with traffic lights.” You click them. “Please try again.” You squint. Is that corner of a pole a traffic light? Does the crosswalk count? Suddenly you’re questioning whether you are, in fact, a human.

You are. Promise. Here’s what’s going on.

🤖

In plain English

A CAPTCHA is a quick test that’s easy for people and hard for robots. Websites use it like a bouncer at the door, letting humans in and keeping out software that’s trying to buy up tickets, spam comments, or copy the whole site.

The bouncer at the door

Picture a club with a bouncer. Most nights, he waves regulars right in. But if a busload of identical guys in sunglasses shows up all at once, he starts checking IDs.

Websites face that busload every day. Programs called bots try to grab concert tickets the second they go on sale, create thousands of fake accounts, guess passwords, or scrape every page to feed AI systems. A CAPTCHA is the bouncer checking IDs. The name is a mouthful: it stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.”

Why there are so many more of them lately

Bots have gotten busy. Lots of companies now send programs to read and copy websites to train AI, and some sites got so overwhelmed they put a bouncer on the front door just to read an article. That’s why you’re seeing “checking your browser” screens in places that never had them.

Many of the newer checks are invisible. They watch how your mouse moves or how your browser behaves, and you only see a puzzle if something seems off.

“Why do I keep failing?”

It’s usually not you. It’s your internet address. Websites see the IP address your traffic comes from, and some addresses look suspicious:

  • A VPN. Thousands of people share the same VPN address, and some of them are bots. Turn it off and try again.
  • Shared connections. Apartment buildings, hotels, coffee shops and even some cell carriers put many users behind one address.
  • Privacy add-ons that block the scripts a CAPTCHA needs to run.
  • An outdated browser. Updating it often makes the puzzles go away.

The fake ones

A real CAPTCHA only asks you to click a box, pick some pictures, or slide a puzzle piece. If a “robot check” ever asks you to press keys, open a box on your computer, or paste something, stop. That’s a scam. Here’s how the fake “I’m not a robot” trick works.

Side note

For years, all that clicking also helped train computers. Those traffic lights and crosswalks you labeled? You were teaching software to see the road.

Too long, didn’t read

  • A CAPTCHA is a quick human test that keeps bots out.
  • There are more of them now because bots, including AI scrapers, have exploded.
  • Failing a lot usually means a VPN, a shared connection, or a blocker, not that something is wrong with you.
  • A real check never asks you to type commands or paste anything.

New phones are ditching the little SIM card tray. An eSIM is the same thing, built in and programmed over the air, like a hotel updating your key card without a trip to the front desk.

Those black cameras on poles with a little solar panel are probably Flock cameras. They read every license plate that passes, and put enough of them together and they can map your habits.
