What Is Bluetooth?

Your headphones, your car, and your wireless mouse all run on it, yet almost nobody can say what it is. Spoiler: it is a low-power radio named after a Viking king.

You pair your headphones with it, your car radio runs on it, and your wireless mouse would be useless without it. Yet almost nobody can say what it actually is.

Bluetooth in one line

A low-power radio signal that lets two nearby devices talk to each other without a single wire.

A little slice of the airwaves

Everyone loves the convenience of going wireless, and there is an actual referee for all those invisible signals in the air. In the United States the FCC decides how strong signals can be and how far they may travel. To keep everyday gadgets from needing a license, certain frequencies were set aside for free personal use.

Bluetooth lives in that free zone. It is deliberately weak, which turns out to be a good thing. It only reaches across a room or so, so it sips battery and does not shout across the whole neighborhood. When two devices are close, they share a private little handshake and start passing data back and forth.

What you actually do with it

That data might be a photo jumping from one phone to another, or the music streaming to your earbuds. And you are not limited to one connection. A single hub can juggle several at once, so go ahead and run the wireless headphones alongside the wireless mouse and keyboard without a tangle in sight.

It is a close cousin of Wi-Fi, but built for a different job. Wi-Fi connects you to the wider world. Bluetooth just connects your gadgets to each other.

Side note

Fun bit of trivia. Bluetooth is named after a 10th-century Viking king who united warring tribes. The tech unites your devices the same way, and the little logo is actually his initials written in Norse runes.

Too long, didn’t read

  • Bluetooth is a low-power radio link for nearby devices.
  • It rides on free frequencies the FCC set aside for personal use.
  • Short range on purpose, which saves battery.
  • It handles headphones, file swaps, and several gadgets at once.

3 min What Is an eSIM?

New phones are ditching the little SIM card tray. An eSIM is the same thing, built in and programmed over the air, like a hotel updating your key card without a trip to the front desk.
