The cloud isn't in the sky. It's in giant, humming, refrigerated warehouses full of computers, and they're hungry for electricity and water. Here's what a data center is.
RAM vs. Storage
The most common hardware mix-up there is, and it costs people money. They buy more storage to fix a slow computer and it’s just as slow. RAM and storage are entirely different things.
This is the most common hardware mix-up there is, and it costs people real money. They feel their computer is slow, so they buy one with more storage, and are baffled when it is just as slow. Storage and memory are two completely different things, and telling them apart is genuinely useful.
In plain English
RAM is your computer’s short-term memory: what it is actively working on right now. Storage is its long-term memory: everything it keeps for later. More storage does not make a computer faster, any more than a bigger filing cabinet makes you think quicker.
Short-term memory versus the filing cabinet
Here is a quick demonstration using your own head. If I give you three colors and ask you to hold onto them, red, blue, green, you just keep them in mind. No effort, no writing. That is short-term memory, and for a computer that is RAM: the small, fast space holding whatever it is juggling this very moment.
Now if I give you twenty-five colors to remember, you cannot hold all that in your head. You grab a pen and write them down to look up later. That written list is long-term memory, and for a computer that is storage, the hard drive or SSD: the big space where everything is kept until you need it.
They pair with the brain from the piece on the CPU. The CPU is the thinker, RAM is what it can hold in mind at once, and storage is the filing cabinet it pulls from and saves to. A bigger filing cabinet lets you keep more. It does nothing to help you think about more at once.
RAM is your desk: how much you can spread out and work on right now. Storage is the filing cabinet: how much you can keep. A bigger cabinet does not give you a bigger desk.
Side note
This is exactly why the fix for a sluggish computer is so often “add more RAM,” not “add more storage.” If your desk is tiny, you are constantly shuffling papers back into the cabinet just to make room, and everything feels slow. A bigger desk, more RAM, lets you keep more open at once and stop shuffling. Buy storage when you are running out of room to keep things. Buy memory when you want it to feel faster.
Too long, didn’t read
- RAM is short-term memory: what the computer is working on right now.
- Storage is long-term memory: everything it keeps for later.
- RAM is your desk; storage is the filing cabinet.
- More storage lets you keep more; more RAM is what makes it feel faster.
