The cloud isn't in the sky. It's in giant, humming, refrigerated warehouses full of computers, and they're hungry for electricity and water. Here's what a data center is.
What Is an API?
Developers say it every ten seconds and everyone else nods along with no picture of it. An API is a menu of things one program will do for another. You meet its results all day.
Developers say this word roughly every ten seconds, and everyone else nods along with no mental picture whatsoever. API. It sounds deeply technical, and the plumbing behind it can be, but the idea is friendly and you meet its results all day long.
In plain English
An API is a menu of things one piece of software will do for another, on request. It lets programs talk to each other and swap information, without either one needing to know how the other works inside.
Ordering from a menu
Think about ordering at a restaurant. You do not march into the kitchen, explain how to cook, and rummage through the fridge. You look at a menu, a fixed list of things the kitchen has agreed to make, and you order from it. The waiter takes your request back, the kitchen does whatever it does out of sight, and your meal comes out. You get what you asked for without ever seeing how it was made.
An API is that menu, for software. When a weather app shows you the forecast, it did not build a weather service. It ordered “today’s forecast for this zip code” off a weather company’s API, and got the answer back. The menu defines exactly what you can ask for, and the kitchen stays hidden. That is what lets a thousand different apps all pull maps, payments, or weather from the same source.
An API is a menu of requests one program will fulfil for another, so software can work together without seeing inside each other.
Side note
Here is a little secret about why programmers love these. Programmers are impatient, and many of them would far rather deal with a plain screen of text than a pretty page full of pictures. Instead of opening a web browser and clicking around, an API lets their code connect straight to the data source and grab exactly what it needs. It is the meat and potatoes, with none of the unnecessary garnish.

New phones are ditching the little SIM card tray. An eSIM is the same thing, built in and programmed over the air, like a hotel updating your key card without a trip to the front desk.
