The cloud isn't in the sky. It's in giant, humming, refrigerated warehouses full of computers, and they're hungry for electricity and water. Here's what a data center is.
What Is Ransomware?
The news attaches it to hospitals and pipelines, but it hits regular people constantly. Ransomware is nasty because it turns your own files against you, taking them hostage in place.
It shows up in the news attached to hospitals, pipelines, and city governments, which makes it sound like a problem for big institutions. But ransomware hits regular people and small businesses constantly, and it is one of the nastier things on this list, because it turns your own files against you.
In plain English
Ransomware is a type of malware that locks up your own files and then demands payment to unlock them. It does not steal your things so much as take them hostage right where they sit.
A stranger changes your locks
Imagine coming home to find that a stranger has slipped in, changed every lock in your house, and left a note on the door: pay up, and maybe you get the keys. Your belongings are all still inside, exactly where you left them. You just cannot get to any of it.
That is ransomware. It quietly encrypts your files, your photos, documents, everything, scrambling them so thoroughly that without the attacker’s key they are useless. Then it posts a ransom demand on your screen, usually asking for payment in cryptocurrency, promising to hand over the key if you pay. Sometimes they keep that promise. Often they do not, because you are dealing with criminals, and a criminal who has your money has little reason to do anything else.
Ransomware does not carry your files out the door. It changes the locks while everything is still inside, and charges you for the keys.
Side note
This is the article that should sell you on backups more than any other. If a clean copy of your files lives somewhere the ransomware cannot reach, an untouched backup, then the whole threat collapses. You do not negotiate, you do not pay, you just wipe the machine and restore. The people who get hurt worst are almost always the ones with no backup and no choice.
Too long, didn’t read
- Ransomware is malware that locks up your own files and demands payment.
- It scrambles your files in place, like a stranger changing all your locks.
- Paying is a gamble; criminals do not always hand over the key.
- A backup the ransomware cannot reach is the thing that defeats it.
