What Is Phishing?

The ‘ph’ spelling is a joke that’s also the perfect memory aid. Phishing is fishing: casting bait and waiting for someone to bite. Seeing it that way makes it far easier to spot.

The spelling is a little joke that turns out to be the perfect memory aid. Phishing, with a “ph,” is named after fishing, because that is exactly what it is: casting out bait and waiting for someone to bite. Once you see it that way, the whole thing gets a lot easier to spot.

🎣

In plain English

Phishing is a scammer sending out a lure, usually a fake message that looks real, hoping to trick you into handing over your login or clicking something harmful. You are the fish. The message is the bait.

Casting a line, hoping you bite

Picture a fisherman. He casts a line with a shiny lure, drops it in the water, and waits. He does not expect every fish to bite, just enough of them. Phishing works exactly the same way. An attacker sends out lures, often thousands at once, dressed up to look like a message from your bank, your email provider, a delivery company, anyone you might trust. They only need a small fraction of people to bite.

What are they fishing for? Most often, your username or email and your password, so they can walk into your account and get at your data. Sometimes the lure is designed to get you to click something that quietly installs malware on your device. Either way, the goal is to get you to act before you think.

Phishing is fishing with a “ph.” The attacker casts a lure dressed up as something you trust, and hopes you bite before you look closely.

Side note

Here is the encouraging part. In almost every case, there are clues that give away the shiny hook: a sense of sudden urgency, a link that does not quite go where it claims, a request no real company would make by email. You do not have to be perfect. You just have to slow down enough to look. The habits over in the scams section are all about spotting that hook before you swallow it.

Too long, didn’t read

  • Phishing is a scammer casting a lure, a fake message dressed up as something you trust.
  • They are usually fishing for your login, or trying to get you to install malware.
  • They send out huge numbers of lures and only need a few people to bite.
  • There are almost always clues; slowing down to look is most of the defense.

New phones are ditching the little SIM card tray. An eSIM is the same thing, built in and programmed over the air, like a hotel updating your key card without a trip to the front desk.
